Engraving printed and hand-colored in 1876.  Excellent color.

From the “Medium Quarto” edition of “American Ornithology” by Alexander Wilson and published by Chatto & Windus – considered to be the finest smaller edition of Wilson’s work.   The Chatto & Windus edition measures 8 1/2″ x 11″, larger than the standard octavo size, and this allowed the entire engraving plate to make its impression.   The edge of the plate impression mark is visible in the margins.  This was the final edition of “American Ornithology” to be hand colored of Wilson.
